Nodular goitres are more common in areas of iodine deficiency. In the UK, toxic multinodular goitre is more often seen in older patients and is associated with cardiac complications such as atrial fibrillation. The thyroid enlargement is often asymmetrical, and the nodules are easily palpable and sometimes visible (Fig. 17.57).
